Portfolio Management

Centralized management of one or more portfolios to achieve strategic objectives.

Definition

It includes identifying, categorizing, evaluating, selecting, prioritizing, balancing, and authorizing components, then monitoring their contribution to strategy. Capacity, risk exposure, and value are balanced across the whole portfolio rather than per project.

Example

A quarterly portfolio review pauses a low-value project to free capacity for a regulatory initiative.

Exam tip

Portfolio managers do not manage project execution; they decide which components get funded.
