Six things we tell people that cost us money

Every training company says it puts your career first. It is an easy thing to say and an impossible thing to check. So here is ours, checkable: six statements that are live on our own tools right now, each one working against something we sell. Follow the links and read them in context.

CompTIA and Cisco certifications carry no college-credit recommendation from ACE.

Search it and you will find dozens of pages saying A+ is worth three ACE credits. They are quoting records that belong to other training companies — ACI Learning and Skillsoft — and attach to those companies’ courses, not to the certification. Neither CompTIA nor Cisco is an ACE participating organisation.

Juniper certifications earn you no college credit. Anywhere.

We checked all five universities that publish articulation tables. Not one of them lists Juniper. It is a career play — service-provider skills are scarce and well paid — but it is not a credit play, and a student deserves to know which one they are buying.

Do not spend your GI Bill on a $400 certification exam.

It works, and it is almost always the wrong tool. The GI Bill covers the test fee only — no prep, no materials — and it charges against your entitlement at roughly half a month per exam. Your service credentialing programme will usually cover the same exam for nothing.

What it costs us The GI Bill is the biggest pot of money a veteran brings us. We tell them to save it.

IAT Level I is a doorway, not a destination.

A+ and Network+ get you in. But the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects help-desk roles to shrink 3% and system administration 4% through 2035, while information security grows 21%. The bottom of this ladder is eroding. Plan to be off it inside eighteen months.

The general education half of your degree should cost you almost nothing.

Modern States runs free courses and pays your CLEP exam fee when you pass. Saylor is free with a $5 proctoring charge. Done properly, forty credits of composition, maths and history costs under $200 instead of several thousand.

What it costs us That is half a degree we are actively telling you not to pay anyone for.

The single heaviest college-credit award in IT is a certificate we do not teach.

Google’s IT Support certificate is worth 15 credits at the University of Maryland Global Campus and carries a 16-credit ACE recommendation. That is most of a semester. It is on our navigator, at the top of the list, with a link.

What “free consultation” usually means, and what this is instead

You have had the other kind. Thirty minutes of questions designed to find out what you can afford, ending in a recommendation that was decided before the call. Here is exactly what happens on ours, so you can hold us to it.

What it is

A conversation about where you want to be in five years, before anything about the next twelve months.
A written map back to you: what you already qualify for, what is missing, and the cheapest order to close the gap.
Specific funding advice — which programme covers what, what the current caps actually are, and which pot to save.
An honest read on whether the certification you were planning is still the one the market is asking for.
Run by people who teach this material, not by a sales desk.

What it is not

A qualifying call. We do not ask your budget, and nobody is scored.
A pitch with a deadline on it. There is no expiring discount at the end.
A funnel. Your details are used to answer your question and nothing else — no list, no drip campaign.
An obligation. Plenty of these end with “go and get the free one first, come back if you still need us.”
Advice we cannot back. Where we are not sure, we say so and point you at the office that decides.

How we think about it

The mistake is not picking the wrong certification. It is not picking a destination.

Almost everyone chooses the next credential because it is next. Five years later they hold six of them and still cannot say what job they were for. We work the other way round.

First

Name the destination

Not “cybersecurity”. A specific job title, at a specific kind of employer, at a specific level. Everything downstream gets easier once that sentence exists.

Then

Work backwards

What does that job actually require — the credential, the clearance, the years? Which of them do you already have? What is genuinely missing, as opposed to what would be nice?

Then

Make each step pay twice

The best move is almost always one that advances the career and banks college credit, or qualifies you for a billet, or both. Study you would have done anyway, counted twice.

Cheapest viable route

Free before paid, funded before self-funded, and the exam before the course where you already know the material. We would rather you spent less with us and came back.

The window while you are still in is the cheapest your certifications and your clearance will ever be. Most people find that out afterwards. The rules changed twice in 2026 and most published advice is now wrong.

Certified, and stalled

You have the credentials and the ceiling arrived anyway. Usually the gap is a degree you assumed you could not afford, or a level you did not know you already qualified for.

Coming in from another trade

Changing careers into IT with no idea which door is real and which is a marketing funnel. The honest answer involves fewer certifications than most people are sold.

Responsible for a team

You need people qualified against a framework by a date, and you need to know which training is load-bearing and which is theatre.
