Army Credentialing Assistance
CA pays for the professional certification that goes with your MOS — the training, the books and the exam — up to $2,000 in a fiscal year, for one credential. The program was cut back in March 2026, so most of what you will read elsewhere is out of date. This page is the current version: who qualifies, what the cap really buys, and how the ArmyIgnitED request runs.

What changed on 19 March 2026
The Army revised the program after its cost rose from about $31 million to over $70 million a year. Five changes matter to you, and every one of them is a reason to plan earlier than Soldiers used to.
CA is now $2,000 per fiscal year, down from $4,000. Aviation-related credentials are capped at $1,000.
Commissioned officers O-1 through O-10 can no longer request new CA funding. Warrant officers and enlisted Soldiers still can.
One credential per Soldier per fiscal year, and a lifetime-style limit of three credentials for Soldiers with under ten years of service.
Every request needs a supervisor or commander to sign it, and they have five days before the request is deleted.
Two recoupment actions across TA and CA in the same fiscal year suspends you from both for twelve months.
Who qualifies
Every line here is checked when you submit, not when you sit the exam.
- Enlisted or warrant officer. Commissioned officers O-1 through O-10 became ineligible for new funding on 19 March 2026. A goal already underway before that date can be finished.
- MOS qualified. AIT complete for enlisted Soldiers, Warrant Officer Basic Course for warrant officers.
- Active, Guard or Reserve. The same rules apply across all three components.
- Not flagged. A flag under AR 600-8-2 stops a request where it stands.
- Not IRR, ING or an ROTC scholarship cadet. Those populations are outside the program.
- First-time users: two things first. The ArmyIgnitED CA training, and the MilGears decision-support tool. Both are done once, and both come before the request.
- A supervisor who will sign. Command approval is required on every request now, not just the first.
Qualifying for the program is not the same as qualifying for the credential. Certifying bodies set their own prerequisites — CISSP wants five years of experience, PMP wants documented project hours. CA will fund an exam you are not yet allowed to sit, and the testing centre will still turn you away.

- That is Tuition Assistance. Different request, same annual pot of money.
- A second credential in the same year
- One per fiscal year. Choose it deliberately.
- Anything you buy first
- CA pays the vendor through the CA Central Billing Office. A personal credit card is not a funding request.
- Credentials not on Army COOL
- If it is not in the catalog for your MOS, CA has nothing to fund.
- Requests submitted late
- Inside 45 days of the start date, the system will not take it.
Making $2,000 cover a real certification
At $2,000 for one credential a year, the arithmetic decides what is possible. A training course at commercial rates plus an exam voucher will usually break the cap on its own — which is why our military-funding rate exists.
- One credential a year means sequence matters. Security+ this year, CySA+ next, and you are two years into a career rather than holding two unrelated certificates.
- TA and CA share a pot. A heavy semester of college courses can leave the credential unfunded.
- Under ten years of service? Three credentials is the ceiling. Spend them on the ones that get you hired, not the ones that are easy to pass.
How to apply, step by step
Out of order, a request is denied on process grounds no matter how good the plan is. The dates are the part people underestimate.
Do the one-time prerequisites
First-time CA users complete the ArmyIgnitED CA training and run the MilGears decision-support tool. Get these out of the way before you have a class date in mind.
Pick the credential on Army COOL
Search your MOS and take the credential's exact official name from the catalog. One credential this fiscal year, so pick the one that moves your career, not the cheapest one on the list.
Create your education goal in ArmyIgnitED
The goal comes first; funding requests attach to it. Getting the credential wrong here means starting over.
Get a vendor quote
An itemised quote naming the credential, with training and exam priced as separate lines. Army CA does not accept the two bundled together. We issue these, usually same day.
Submit the CA request in the window
Not earlier than 90 days and not later than 45 days before the course or exam start date. Miss the late boundary and there is no appeal — you move your class date.
Your supervisor signs within five days
Supervisor, commander's representative or commander, with a CAC signature. Unsigned after five days and the request is deleted, not held.
ACAPO reviews, the billing office pays
Approved requests route to the CA Central Billing Office, which pays the vendor directly. You should not be out of pocket at any point.
Train, test, and report the result
Taking the exam is not optional: CA pays for training on the condition that you sit the credential exam. Skip it and the cost is recouped from you. Vendors upload results, but the responsibility to see it done is yours.
The timing, in one line
Pick your class date, count back 90 days — that is the earliest you may submit. Count back 45 days — that is the last day you may submit. Your supervisor has 5 days from submission to sign. Everything else is reading and paperwork you can do tonight.
Why requests get denied
None of these are close calls. Each is a request that was going to be funded and was not.
The most common denial of all, and the least negotiable. Work backwards from your class date and give yourself margin.
The request is deleted, not queued. Tell them it is coming and what they are looking for.
Training and exam on one line gets kicked back. The quote has to itemise them separately.
They come from the same annual pot. Heavy TA use in the same fiscal year leaves less for CA, whatever the CA ceiling says.
Most of what is online still describes the pre-March 2026 program. Commissioned officers are out.
CA pays the vendor. Buying your own seat converts a funded certification into a personal expense.
Finishing the course and skipping the test triggers recoupment. If life gets in the way, talk to your education centre before the deadline, not after.
Two in one fiscal year across TA and CA and you are suspended from both for twelve months. There is a 60-day appeal, and it needs supervisor support.

Results reported, not forgotten
Exam results have to reach ArmyIgnitED or the cost comes back on you. We do our part of that on time and tell you when it is done.

Questions Soldiers actually ask
How much is CA worth now?
Up to $2,000 per fiscal year, for one credential, and $1,000 for aviation-related credentials. It was $4,000 before 19 March 2026, which is why so much of what you will read online is wrong.
Can officers still use CA?
No. Commissioned officers O-1 through O-10 became ineligible for new CA funding on 19 March 2026. Warrant officers W-1 through W-5 and enlisted Soldiers remain eligible. An officer who had a goal underway before that date may finish that credential.
Does CA come out of the same money as Tuition Assistance?
Yes. TA and CA draw on one annual pot per Soldier, so spending heavily on college courses leaves less room for a credential in the same fiscal year. Plan them together rather than separately.
Can Guard and Reserve Soldiers use CA?
Yes. Active component, Army National Guard and Army Reserve all work to the same rules, though your education centre is the one that knows your component's local process.
When exactly do I have to submit?
Not earlier than 90 days and not later than 45 days before the course or exam start date, with your supervisor signing within five days of submission. Both ends of that window are enforced by the system.
Do I have to take the exam?
Yes, and this is the part that costs Soldiers money. CA funds the training on the condition you sit the credential exam. Not sitting it triggers recoupment of what was paid.
What happens if I fail the exam?
A genuine failure is treated differently from not showing up. What you must not do is go quiet: report the result, talk to your education counsellor, and understand where you stand before the next fiscal year.
Is there a service obligation?
CA does not carry one. Tuition Assistance does for some populations, so do not assume the rules for one apply to the other.
Can I use CA and thinQflex together?
No. Our flat military-funding rate is already a discounted rate for funded Soldiers, so it does not stack with the name-your-price program. If CA does not cover you, thinQflex is the alternative, not the supplement.
Who does the money go to?
The CA Central Billing Office pays the vendor directly once your request is approved. You should never be fronting the cost and waiting for reimbursement.
How many credentials can I get over a career?
One per fiscal year, and Soldiers with under ten years of service are held to three credentials. Sequence them: a baseline certification, then the one that specialises you, then the one that hires you.
