PMI Program Management Professional (PgMP) exam guide

Exam PgMP

The Program Management Professional (PgMP) proves you can manage multiple related projects to deliver strategic benefits, not just single projects. It is one of PMI's most selective credentials because experience is checked by a panel of certified program managers before you may sit the exam, which makes it a strong differentiator for senior delivery leaders.

Build my study plan

  1. Weeks 1-2: Write program experience summaries for the panel review using PMI's domain language; get a peer to review them.
  2. Weeks 3-5: Read The Standard for Program Management (5th edition) twice; map each section to the five ECO domains.
  3. Weeks 6-8: Focus on Program Life Cycle Management (44%) with scenario questions on transitions, closure and component projects.
  4. Weeks 9-10: Benefits management and governance: benefits registers, sustainment and governance board decisions.
  5. Weeks 11-12: Two full 170-question timed simulations; review every wrong answer against the standard.

Exam-day tips

  • Answer from the program level: escalate to the governance board or adjust components, not project-level fixes.
  • Benefits realization is the lens for most questions; prefer answers that protect or measure benefits.
  • Panel review failures usually come from describing project tasks; write summaries about program decisions.
  • Pace at about 1.4 minutes per question; four hours is tiring, so use the optional break.
  • Know PMI terminology from the 5th edition standard (program definition, delivery, closure phases).

Frequently asked questions

How much does the PgMP cost?

USD 800 for PMI members and USD 1,000 for nonmembers in the US.

What is the PgMP panel review?

Certified program managers evaluate your program management experience summaries; you must pass it before you can schedule the exam.

How hard is the PgMP?

It is harder than the PMP because of the panel review and because questions require program-level judgment rather than process recall.

How do I renew PgMP?

Earn 60 PDUs every three years and pay the renewal fee through PMI's CCR system.
