Video Bandwidth Provisioning

Sizing network capacity for video by adding overhead, typically about 20 percent, to the configured video call rate.

Definition

Video streams are bursty and variable, with I-frames producing spikes well above the average rate, and IP/UDP/RTP headers add overhead. Cisco design guidance adds 20 percent to the call rate (for example 1.2 Mbps for a 1 Mbps call) when sizing queues and CAC. Region and location settings in CUCM control the video bit rate and admitted calls.

Example

A 1080p call at 2 Mbps is provisioned as 2.4 Mbps in the video queue.

Exam tip

Remember the 20 percent overhead rule and that video bursts at I-frames.
