CUCM Region

A CUCM setting that defines the maximum audio and video bit rate and preferred codec list for calls within and between regions.

Definition

Regions control codec selection: administrators set the maximum audio bit rate (for example 64 kbps for G.711/G.722 or 8 kbps for G.729) and video bandwidth for calls inside a region and between each pair of regions. Audio codec preference lists set the order of preferred codecs. If two endpoints cannot agree on a codec allowed by the region relationship, CUCM inserts a transcoder.

Example

Calls between region HQ and region Branch are limited to 8 kbps, forcing G.729 over the WAN.

Exam tip

Regions control codec choice (quality), while locations control how many calls fit (bandwidth via CAC); do not mix them up.
