Throw Ratio

A projector's throw distance divided by the image width, used to determine where to mount the projector.

Definition

A 1.5:1 throw ratio means the projector must be 1.5 m away for each 1 m of image width. Zoom lenses provide a range of ratios, while short-throw (below about 1:1) and ultra-short-throw lenses allow placement close to the screen. Lens shift moves the image without distortion, unlike digital keystone correction.

Example

For a 3 m wide image with a 1.8:1 lens, the projector is mounted 5.4 m from the screen.

Exam tip

Throw distance = throw ratio x image width.
