Projection Screen Gain

A measure of how much light a screen reflects toward the on-axis viewer compared with a matte-white reference of 1.0.

Definition

Screens with gain above 1.0 appear brighter on-axis but have narrower viewing angles (half-gain angle). Gray and ambient light rejecting screens improve contrast in lit rooms. Rear-projection and acoustically transparent screens have their own characteristics. Screen choice works together with projector brightness to achieve target contrast.

Example

A 1.3-gain screen in a narrow room increases brightness without hurting side viewers.

Exam tip

High gain narrows viewing angle; wide rooms need lower-gain screens.
