Projector Brightness

The light output of a projector, specified in ANSI lumens, which determines image visibility in ambient light.

Definition

ANSI lumens are measured as an average across multiple points of a full-white image. Required brightness depends on image size, screen gain, ambient light and the contrast ratio needed for the content. Laser light sources maintain brightness longer than lamps, while all projectors lose brightness over time.

Example

A 7,000-lumen laser projector is specified for a large lecture hall with some window light.

Exam tip

Brightness requirements rise with screen size and ambient light; use contrast ratio standards to verify.
