Aspect Ratio

The proportional relationship between a display's width and height, such as 16:9.

Definition

Common aspect ratios are 16:9 for most monitors and TVs, 16:10 for many laptops, 21:9 for ultrawide, and 4:3 for older displays. Mismatched content shows black bars or stretching. Aspect ratio affects which resolutions look correct.

Example

2560x1080 is a 21:9 ultrawide resolution.

Exam tip

Stretched images may mean the output resolution's aspect ratio does not match the panel.
