systemd Target

A systemd unit that groups other units to define a system state, replacing SysV runlevels.

Definition

Key targets include multi-user.target (text, networked), graphical.target, rescue.target (single-user with basic services) and emergency.target (minimal, root mounted read-only). systemctl set-default changes the boot target and systemctl isolate switches immediately.

Example

systemctl set-default multi-user.target makes a server boot without a GUI.

Exam tip

emergency.target is more minimal than rescue.target; use it when even local filesystems fail to mount.
