Linux Foundation Certified System Administrator (LFCS) exam guide

Exam LFCS

The Linux Foundation Certified System Administrator (LFCS) proves you can run, configure and troubleshoot Linux systems from a live command line rather than answer multiple-choice questions. Because it is fully hands-on and distribution-independent, it is a credible signal for sysadmin, SRE and cloud operations roles in 2026 and a natural base for Kubernetes certifications.

Build my study plan

  1. Week 1-2: Build two VMs (Ubuntu and a RHEL-family distro) and drill essential commands, file permissions, find/grep/sed and archives.
  2. Week 3: Users, groups, sudoers, PAM password policy and quotas.
  3. Week 4: Storage - partitions, LVM (create, extend, snapshot), swap, NFS mounts and fstab.
  4. Week 5: Networking - static IPs, routing, firewalld/ufw, SSH hardening, hostname resolution and time sync.
  5. Week 6: Operations - systemd units, timers and cron, package management, containers, kernel parameters and log troubleshooting.
  6. Week 7-8: Timed mock labs, then use your free retake strategically if needed.

Exam-day tips

  • Use man pages and --help freely; documentation lookup is part of real-world work and the exam environment allows it.
  • Persist every change: edit /etc/fstab, enable services, and make sysctl settings permanent, or a reboot check will fail you.
  • Skip long tasks and return later; Operations Deployment and Networking together are half the score.
  • Verify each task (mount -a, systemctl status, ip a) before moving on.
  • Know both apt and dnf tooling since the exam is distribution-independent.
  • Practice in a terminal without a GUI so you are fast with vim or nano.

Frequently asked questions

How much does the LFCS exam cost?

$445 USD for the exam, which includes one free retake. Bundles with the LFS207 course or a THRIVE-ONE subscription cost more.

Is the LFCS exam hands-on?

Yes. It is a 2-hour, online proctored, performance-based exam where you solve problems on live Linux systems.

How long is LFCS valid?

2 years. You renew by passing the current exam again.

LFCS vs RHCSA: which is better?

RHCSA is Red Hat-specific and favored by RHEL shops; LFCS is distribution-independent. Both are hands-on; many admins hold both.

Is LFCS worth it in 2026?

Yes for infrastructure roles: it proves real command-line ability and is a strong stepping stone to CKA and CKS.
