Runlevel

A legacy SysV init operating mode (0-6) defining which services run; replaced by systemd targets on modern Linux.

Definition

Traditional runlevels were 0 halt, 1 single-user, 3 multi-user text, 5 graphical and 6 reboot. systemd maps them to targets such as rescue.target, multi-user.target and graphical.target.

Example

runlevel3.target is an alias for multi-user.target on systemd systems.

Exam tip

Map runlevel 3 to multi-user.target and runlevel 5 to graphical.target.
