systemd

The default Linux init system and service manager that runs as PID 1 and starts, stops and supervises services and other units.

Definition

systemd manages units (services, sockets, timers, mounts, targets) with dependency-based parallel startup, cgroup-based process tracking and integrated logging through journald. It replaced SysV init on nearly all major distributions.

Example

systemctl status sshd shows whether the SSH service is running and its recent log lines.

Exam tip

Know that systemd is PID 1 and that units, targets and systemctl replace init scripts and runlevels.
