Nit (cd/m2)

A unit of luminance equal to one candela per square meter, used to specify display brightness.

Definition

Typical office displays produce 300 to 500 nits, while displays for bright lobbies or windows may need 700 nits or more and outdoor displays several thousand. HDR content benefits from high peak brightness. Projector brightness, by contrast, is measured in lumens, and the resulting screen luminance depends on screen size and gain.

Example

A sunlit atrium uses 2,500-nit displays so content remains visible.

Exam tip

Displays are rated in nits; projectors in lumens.
