Contrast Ratio

The ratio of the brightest white to the darkest black in an image, which in a real room is dominated by ambient light.

Definition

Manufacturer contrast specs are measured in dark rooms, while system contrast depends on room light falling on the screen. The ANSI/INFOCOMM 3M-2011 projected image system contrast ratio standard recommends minimum ratios: 7:1 for passive viewing, 15:1 for basic decision making, 50:1 for analytical decision making and 80:1 for full-motion video.

Example

A training room projector achieves 18:1 system contrast, sufficient for basic decision making content.
