Direct-View LED Display (dvLED)

A display built from tiled modules of red, green and blue LEDs that emit light directly, with no LCD or backlight.

Definition

Direct-view LED walls scale to very large sizes without visible bezels, provide high brightness and wide viewing angles, and are used in lobbies, auditoriums and control rooms. They require processors to map content to the cabinet layout and careful calibration for uniformity. MicroLED is a fine-pitch evolution of this technology.

Example

A 5 m by 3 m dvLED wall replaces dual projectors in a town hall space.

Exam tip

dvLED is emissive and bezel-free; LCD video walls have bezels.
