High Dynamic Range (HDR)

Video formats that represent a wider range of brightness and color than standard dynamic range, using 10-bit or higher depth.

Definition

HDR formats include HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision and HLG, each with different metadata and transfer functions. HDR requires capable sources, displays and interfaces with enough bandwidth, and metadata must pass through switchers and extenders. Wide color gamuts such as Rec. 2020 often accompany HDR.

Example

A media player sends HDR10 through an HDMI 2.0 switcher that must pass the HDR metadata to the display.

Exam tip

HDR requires end-to-end support; a single non-compliant device in the chain can strip it.
