Mount Point

An existing directory where a filesystem is attached so its contents become accessible at that path.

Definition

When a filesystem is mounted on a directory, any files previously in that directory are hidden until it is unmounted. Mount points are commonly under /mnt, /media, or dedicated paths like /data.

Example

Mounting /dev/sdb1 on /backup makes the partition's files appear under /backup.

Exam tip

Files written to a mount point directory while nothing is mounted end up on the parent filesystem and become hidden after mounting.
