mount

The Linux command that attaches a filesystem on a device or network share to a directory in the file tree.

Definition

mount takes a source and a mount point and may specify type (-t) and options (-o) such as ro, noexec or nfsvers. Mounts made with the command alone are temporary; persistent mounts belong in /etc/fstab or systemd mount units. umount detaches a filesystem.

Example

mount -t nfs nas01:/exports/home /mnt/home mounts an NFS share.

Exam tip

umount fails with 'target is busy' when a process has files open; find it with lsof or fuser -m.
