/etc/fstab

The Linux file that lists filesystems to mount automatically at boot, with their devices, mount points, types and options.

Definition

Each fstab line has six fields: device (often UUID=), mount point, filesystem type, mount options, dump flag and fsck pass order. Errors in fstab can drop a system into emergency mode at boot, so test with mount -a before rebooting.

Example

UUID=3f2a... /data xfs defaults 0 0 mounts an XFS filesystem at /data at boot.

Exam tip

Use UUIDs instead of /dev/sdX names because device names can change; always validate with mount -a or findmnt --verify.
