Frame Rate (fps)

The number of complete video images displayed or transmitted per second, such as 30 or 60 frames per second.

Definition

Higher frame rates produce smoother motion but need more bandwidth. Conferencing typically uses 30 fps for people video and may reduce frame rate for content sharing. Broadcast standards use rates such as 25/50 fps in PAL regions and 29.97/59.94 fps in NTSC regions, and refresh rate (Hz) refers to how often the display redraws.

Example

A Room Kit sends people video at 1080p60 and slides at 1080p5 to save bandwidth.

Exam tip

Frame rate is a source/signal property; refresh rate is a display property.
