Progressive Scan

A video format that draws every line of each frame in sequence, denoted by p, as in 1080p.

Definition

Progressive video displays complete frames, giving better motion clarity and avoiding interlace artifacts. Interlaced video (denoted i, as in 1080i) alternates odd and even lines in two fields per frame, a legacy broadcast technique to save bandwidth. Displays deinterlace interlaced sources, which can introduce artifacts.

Example

1080i60 sends 60 fields per second, while 1080p60 sends 60 full frames.

Exam tip

Lowercase p means progressive; i means interlaced.
