Lip Sync

The alignment of audio with corresponding video so speech matches lip movement.

Definition

Lip sync errors arise when video processing such as scaling, compression or display processing delays video more than audio. Viewers tolerate audio lagging video better than audio leading video. Fixes include adding audio delay in DSPs, using HDMI auto lip sync or matching processing paths.

Example

A DSP adds 80 ms of delay to program audio to match the processing delay of a video wall.

Exam tip

Audio leading video is more noticeable; delay audio to match video, not the other way around.
