Biometric Authentication

Verifying identity using unique physiological or behavioral characteristics.

Definition

Physiological biometrics include fingerprint, face, iris, retina, palm vein, and voice; behavioral biometrics include keystroke dynamics, gait, and signature dynamics. Systems compare a live sample to an enrolled template and accept matches above a threshold. Accuracy is measured by FAR, FRR, and CER.

Example

A data center uses palm vein scanners at the access control vestibule.

Exam tip

Retina scans are highly accurate but intrusive; fingerprints are common but easier to spoof.
