Inherence Factor

Authentication factor based on something the user is, such as a fingerprint, face, iris, or voice.

Definition

Inherence factors use physiological or behavioral biometrics. They are convenient and hard to share, but cannot be changed if compromised and involve error rates (FAR and FRR). Biometric data is sensitive personal information requiring strong protection.

Example

Unlocking a laptop with a fingerprint reader uses an inherence factor.

Exam tip

Biometrics cannot be reissued like passwords; templates must be protected.
