False Acceptance Rate (FAR)

Biometric error rate at which unauthorized users are incorrectly accepted; a Type II error.

Definition

FAR measures how often an impostor is matched as a legitimate user. Lowering the sensitivity threshold increases FAR. It is the more dangerous error for security because it grants access to the wrong person.

Example

A fingerprint reader with a FAR of 1 in 50,000 lets roughly one impostor attempt in 50,000 succeed.

Exam tip

FAR = Type II = false accept = security risk.
