False Rejection Rate (FRR)

Biometric error rate at which legitimate users are incorrectly rejected; a Type I error.

Definition

FRR measures how often an enrolled user fails to be recognized. Raising sensitivity reduces FAR but increases FRR, frustrating users. High FRR hurts usability and can push users toward workarounds.

Example

Users with dry fingers are repeatedly rejected by a strict fingerprint reader.

Exam tip

FRR = Type I = false reject = usability problem.
