Routing & Switching · Intermediate

Weight

A Cisco-proprietary BGP value local to one router; the highest weight is preferred first in best-path selection.

Definition

Weight ranges 0-65535, defaults to 0 for learned routes and 32768 for locally originated routes. It is not advertised to any peer, so it only influences the router where it is set. Set per neighbor or via route map.

Example

neighbor 10.1.1.2 weight 200

Exam tip

Use weight to influence one router's outbound choice; use local preference to influence the whole AS.
