Local Preference (LOCAL_PREF)

A well-known discretionary BGP attribute shared among iBGP peers; the highest value is preferred for outbound traffic from the AS.

Definition

Default local preference is 100. It is set on routes received from eBGP peers and propagated through iBGP, so all routers in the AS exit via the preferred link. It is not sent to eBGP peers.

Example

route-map ISP1-IN permit 10 / set local-preference 200

Exam tip

Local preference controls outbound traffic (how you leave your AS); AS-path prepending and MED influence inbound traffic.
