VRF-Lite

Using VRFs for Layer 3 segmentation without MPLS or MP-BGP, by carrying each VRF on separate interfaces or subinterfaces hop by hop.

Definition

VRF-Lite (Multi-VRF CE) assigns interfaces or 802.1Q subinterfaces to VRFs on each router and runs a routing protocol instance per VRF. It is simple for small numbers of VRFs but scales poorly because every link needs a subinterface per VRF. It is commonly used for CE-side segmentation and SD-Access fusion handoff.

Example

interface Gi0/1.10 / encapsulation dot1Q 10 / vrf forwarding GUEST

Exam tip

VRF-Lite has no route distinguisher or route target requirements and no labels.
