Virtual Routing and Forwarding (VRF)

A technology that creates multiple independent routing tables on one router so overlapping or separated networks coexist.

Definition

Each VRF has its own RIB, FIB and set of interfaces, so traffic in one VRF cannot reach another unless routes are leaked. VRFs underpin MPLS L3VPN and are used in enterprises for segmentation. Junos implements VRFs as routing instances of type vrf or virtual-router.

Example

vrf definition CUSTOMER-A / rd 65000:1 / address-family ipv4

Exam tip

VRF-Lite provides VRFs without MPLS; MPLS L3VPN adds route distinguishers, route targets and MP-BGP.
