Route Leaking

Selectively copying routes between routing tables such as VRFs or IS-IS levels to allow controlled reachability.

Definition

In VRFs, routes can be leaked with route-target import/export, static routes pointing into another VRF, or BGP import maps. In IS-IS, routes are leaked from Level 2 into Level 1 to allow optimal exit selection. Leaking must be controlled to avoid breaking segmentation.

Example

ip route vrf GUEST 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 GigabitEthernet0/0 203.0.113.1 global

Exam tip

Shared services (DNS, DHCP) in a separate VRF are reached by importing their route target into user VRFs.
