VP8

A royalty-free video codec from Google that, along with H.264, is mandatory to implement in WebRTC.

Definition

VP8 offers compression comparable to H.264 Baseline and is widely used in browser-based real-time video. Its successor VP9 improves efficiency and supports scalable modes, while AV1 builds on similar ideas. Interoperating VP8 browser clients with H.264 room systems may require transcoding in a media server or gateway.

Example

A browser-based WebRTC guest joins a meeting using VP8 video, and the meeting server transcodes to H.264 for a legacy room system.

Exam tip

WebRTC mandatory video codecs are VP8 and H.264; mandatory audio is Opus and G.711.
