Web Real-Time Communication (WebRTC)

A W3C and IETF framework that lets browsers and apps exchange real-time audio, video and data without plugins.

Definition

WebRTC defines JavaScript APIs and protocols for capturing media, negotiating sessions with SDP, traversing NAT with ICE, STUN and TURN, and securing media with mandatory DTLS-SRTP. The signaling method is left to the application. Webex, Microsoft Teams web clients, Google Meet and Cisco Expressway guest access use WebRTC.

Example

A guest joins a Webex meeting from Chrome without installing software, using WebRTC with Opus and VP8 or H.264.

Exam tip

WebRTC mandates encryption (DTLS-SRTP) and uses ICE for NAT traversal; signaling is not standardized.
