Transcoder (XCODE)

A DSP-based media resource that converts a media stream from one codec to another when endpoints share no common codec.

Definition

CUCM inserts a transcoder when region settings or endpoint capabilities prevent agreement on a codec, such as a G.729-only branch calling a G.711-only voicemail port. IOS transcoders use PVDM DSPs and register to CUCM with SCCP. Transcoders can also provide MTP functions when an MTP is required and none is available.

Example

A branch phone limited to G.729 by region calls a G.711-only IVR at HQ, and CUCM inserts the HQ transcoder.

Exam tip

Transcoding needs DSP hardware; software MTPs cannot transcode.
