Volume Group (VG)

In LVM, a pool of storage built from one or more physical volumes from which logical volumes are allocated.

Definition

A VG aggregates the extents of its PVs; its extent size is set at creation (default 4 MiB). Adding PVs with vgextend increases capacity available to logical volumes, and vgreduce removes empty PVs.

Example

vgcreate vg_data /dev/sdb /dev/sdc creates a VG spanning two disks.

Exam tip

vgs shows free space in a VG; an LV can only grow if its VG has free extents.
