Logical Volume Manager (LVM)

A Linux storage layer that pools physical disks into volume groups and carves flexible, resizable logical volumes from them.

Definition

LVM abstracts physical storage into physical volumes (PVs), volume groups (VGs) and logical volumes (LVs), allowing volumes to span disks, be resized online and be snapshotted. It is the default disk layout in RHEL installs.

Example

pvcreate /dev/sdb; vgextend vg01 /dev/sdb; lvextend -r -L +20G /dev/vg01/lv_data adds a disk and grows a volume with its filesystem.

Exam tip

Know the order PV then VG then LV, and that lvextend -r resizes the filesystem in the same step.
