Voice Extensible Markup Language (VoiceXML)

A W3C XML language for defining voice dialogs, used by IVR platforms for prompts, speech recognition and DTMF input.

Definition

VoiceXML separates IVR application logic, served by web or application servers, from the voice browser that executes it on the media platform. It supports speech grammars, text-to-speech and recording. Cisco CVP and many other IVR platforms are built on VoiceXML.

Example

A VXML gateway fetches a VoiceXML document from the CVP VXML server and plays the menu to the caller.

Exam tip

VoiceXML is the language; the VXML browser on a gateway executes it.
