Virtual Network Peering

Azure feature that connects two VNets, in the same or different regions, over the Microsoft backbone with private IPs.

Definition

Peered VNets communicate with low latency as if on one network, including across regions (global peering) and subscriptions or tenants. Peering is non-transitive and requires non-overlapping address spaces; gateway transit lets spokes use a hub's VPN or ExpressRoute gateway.

Example

Spoke VNets peer with a hub VNet and use the hub's VPN gateway to reach on-premises through gateway transit.

Exam tip

Peering is not transitive: spoke A cannot reach spoke B through the hub unless an NVA/firewall routes it or they peer directly.
