VPC Peering

Private networking connection between two virtual networks that routes traffic using private IP addresses.

Definition

VPC peering connects two VPCs in the same or different accounts and regions over the provider backbone. Peering is non-transitive, CIDR ranges cannot overlap, and both sides must update route tables (AWS) or create the peering (Google Cloud). For many networks, a transit gateway or hub-and-spoke design scales better than a full mesh.

Example

VPC A peers with VPC B and VPC C, but B cannot reach C through A because peering is not transitive.

Exam tip

Non-transitivity and no overlapping CIDRs are the two VPC peering rules most frequently tested.
