Microsoft Azure Network Engineer Associate exam guide

Exam AZ-700

AZ-700 proves you can design and implement Azure networking: core VNet infrastructure, hybrid connectivity (VPN, ExpressRoute, Virtual WAN), application delivery, private access and network security. It is the specialist credential for engineers who own Azure network architecture rather than general administration.

Build my study plan

  1. Week 1-2: Core networking: VNets, subnets, IP planning, DNS (private zones, resolver), peering and UDRs in a lab subscription.
  2. Week 3: Hybrid connectivity: build a site-to-site VPN between two VNets, study ExpressRoute SKUs and Virtual WAN routing.
  3. Week 4: Application delivery: compare Load Balancer, Application Gateway, Front Door and Traffic Manager; deploy each once.
  4. Week 5: Private access and security: Private Link, Azure Firewall policies, WAF and NSG flow logs.
  5. Week 6: Practice assessment, review weak areas against the July 2026 skills outline, sit the exam.

Make it yours: pick your exam date and weekly hours. We'll split your time by domain weight and give you a printable plan.

Exam-day tips

  • Have a decision table memorized for Load Balancer vs Application Gateway vs Front Door vs Traffic Manager (layer, scope, global vs regional).
  • Know ExpressRoute circuit SKUs, peering types and FastPath, and when VPN coexists with ExpressRoute.
  • Private endpoint DNS resolution (private DNS zones and DNS Private Resolver) is a frequent trap.
  • Practice subnet math; some questions hinge on Azure reserving five IPs per subnet and on gateway subnet sizing.
  • Expect Virtual WAN routing intent and routing preference questions in connectivity scenarios.

Frequently asked questions

How much does AZ-700 cost?

$165 in the United States; prices vary by country.

Is AZ-700 harder than AZ-104?

It is narrower but deeper. Engineers with a networking background often find it easier; pure sysadmins usually find hybrid connectivity and BGP topics harder.

Is AZ-104 required for AZ-700?

No formal prerequisite, but the exam assumes AZ-104-level Azure administration knowledge.

How do I renew AZ-700?

Pass the free online renewal assessment on Microsoft Learn within 6 months before your annual expiry date.

AZ-700 vs CCNP for a cloud career?

CCNP proves deep on-premises routing and switching; AZ-700 proves Azure cloud networking. Hybrid network engineers benefit from both.
