Azure Virtual Network (VNet)

Azure's fundamental private network that isolates resources and enables communication with each other, the internet and on-premises networks.

Definition

A VNet is scoped to one region and subscription, has one or more address spaces divided into subnets, and provides default system routes between subnets. Azure reserves five IP addresses in each subnet. VNets connect to each other through peering and to on-premises networks through VPN Gateway or ExpressRoute.

Example

A VNet 10.10.0.0/16 contains web (10.10.1.0/24), app (10.10.2.0/24) and data (10.10.3.0/24) subnets.

Exam tip

Remember the five reserved addresses per subnet when sizing subnets; a /29 yields only 3 usable IPs.
