Uptime Institute Tier Classification

The Uptime Institute's four-level data center standard (Tier I to IV) rating infrastructure redundancy, maintainability and fault tolerance.

Definition

Tier I is basic capacity with no redundancy; Tier II adds redundant capacity components; Tier III is concurrently maintainable, so any component can be taken offline for maintenance without affecting IT load; Tier IV is fault tolerant, surviving any single failure with 2N-style independent distribution paths. Uptime certifies designs, constructed facilities and operations separately.

Example

A colocation provider markets a Tier III certified facility with N+1 cooling and dual power paths.

Exam tip

Concurrently maintainable means Tier III; fault tolerant means Tier IV. Do not confuse Uptime tiers with TIA-942 ratings.
