N+1 Redundancy

A design providing one more component than needed to carry the load, so any single unit can fail or be maintained without impact.

Definition

If four cooling units are required, N+1 installs five. N+1 protects components but may share a single distribution path, unlike 2N.

Example

Five 500 kW UPS modules support a 2,000 kW load in an N+1 configuration.

Exam tip

N+1 adds one spare component; 2N duplicates the entire system.
