Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI)

Modern system firmware that replaces legacy BIOS, supporting GPT boot disks, Secure Boot and a pre-boot environment.

Definition

UEFI loads boot loaders from a FAT-formatted EFI System Partition and supports disks larger than 2 TiB via GPT, faster boot, network boot (PXE/HTTP boot) and Secure Boot signature verification.

Example

efibootmgr -v lists the UEFI boot entries on a Linux server.

Exam tip

UEFI pairs with GPT; legacy BIOS pairs with MBR. Secure Boot requires UEFI mode.
