Preboot Execution Environment (PXE)

A standard that lets a computer boot from the network, using DHCP to find a boot server and TFTP to download a boot image.

Definition

PXE is used for automated operating system deployment. DHCP options 66 and 67 or a PXE-aware DHCP proxy direct clients to the boot server.

Example

A new PC boots via PXE and installs Windows from a deployment server.

Exam tip

PXE = DHCP + TFTP network boot.
