Media Termination Point (MTP)

A CUCM media resource that anchors an RTP stream to bridge mismatches such as DTMF methods, early offer or IPv4/IPv6.

Definition

An MTP terminates media from one endpoint and originates it toward another, allowing CUCM to supply SDP details before endpoints are known (early offer), interwork in-band and out-of-band DTMF, convert between IPv4 and IPv6, or support supplementary services on H.323 trunks. Software MTPs on CUCM support only G.711 and are limited in capacity, while IOS MTPs and transcoders can handle more codecs.

Example

A SIP trunk with 'Media Termination Point Required' checked allocates an MTP for every call so CUCM can send early offer.

Exam tip

Watch for MTP as the answer for DTMF interworking or early offer; a transcoder can also act as an MTP.
