Topology Hiding

Concealing internal IP addresses, hostnames and network structure from external parties by rewriting signaling and relaying media.

Definition

SBCs such as CUBE rewrite SIP headers such as Via, Contact and Record-Route and SDP connection addresses so external peers see only the SBC. This reduces reconnaissance and attack surface and avoids NAT problems. Media flow-through is required to hide media addresses as well.

Example

The ITSP sees only CUBE's public IP address in every SIP and RTP packet from the enterprise.

Exam tip

Topology hiding is a key reason to place an SBC at every external SIP boundary.
