Session Border Controller (SBC)

A device at the edge of a VoIP network that secures, normalizes and controls SIP signaling and media between domains.

Definition

An SBC is a B2BUA that provides topology hiding, NAT traversal, signaling and media security (TLS and SRTP), protocol and codec interworking, call admission control, DoS protection and SIP header normalization. It forms the demarcation point between an enterprise and an ITSP or between internal UC systems. Examples include Cisco Unified Border Element, Oracle, Ribbon and AudioCodes SBCs, which are also certified for Teams Direct Routing.

Example

An AudioCodes SBC connects Microsoft Teams Direct Routing to the enterprise's existing SIP trunk provider.

Exam tip

SBC functions to remember: security, interworking, topology hiding, demarcation and CAC.
